Why Angels & Animals?
“While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son/daughter*. She wrapped him/her in cloths and placed him/her in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of MotherGod* appeared to them, and the glory of the MotherGod* shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.”
– Luke 1:6-9; *paraphrased by Ally
The gift of the birth narrative of Christ is that we are invited to place ourselves inside this story.
By imagining into the story, we become each of the characters and, then, can reflect on what we learn by listening deeply to what the sacred text shares.
One of the things I’ve noticed in this text is the presence of the angel/s and shepherds at the onset of Christ’s born radiance into the world. And while the angel appears to Mary and Joseph after the birth of Christ, I believe the angel has been there all along, waiting for the right time to appear with the message, “Do not be afraid.”
The text doesn’t specifically name the presence of sheep or other animals, yet with the presence of the shepherd, we can presume that sheep were around. Nativity scenes all around the world include donkeys, sheep, oxen, cows and other manger type creatures — this is a gift!
At Christmas/Winter Solstice, the coming light is a focus. And, as we envision that this light, this Christos, is being born anew from within us, we have an opportunity to know the presence of angels, the presence of animals is there to witness and support our birth, whispering the words “Do Not Be Afraid.”

“My time with Ally has been critical life support for me. Ally has awakened color and beauty in my life. When I began “diving deep” with art, I trusted Ally’s leadership and her invitation to LOVE myself and listen to my own voice. She helped me “hear” and “see” in new ways. Ally guided me to linger and be led by feminine wisdom.”
